Life after Season of Docs has been pretty busy.

Volunteering: Oppia — the organization I worked for during Season of Docs — asked me to write a post about my experience on SoD so I did. I asked to be involved in their international outreach efforts and have been learning how volunteers across the globe have been contributing to Oppia. There’s an intern program called Outreachy which, similar to SoD, also aims to connect applicants to open source organizations.

One Outreachy intern working for Oppia has been getting children in a refugee camp in Palestine to use Oppia’s lessons, and observing the impact and effectiveness on these students. Another intern is helping with Oppia’s marketing strategy. I’ve been assisting with copywriting needs whenever they arise and it’s been pretty interesting seeing these guys at work.

Write the Docs presentation: I had the opportunity to present a talk at the Write the Docs Toronto meetup which was a great way to demonstrate what I had learnt — I ended up using the Documenting with Sphinx tutorial I created for this blog to demonstrate how to use Sphinx and reStructuredText. There was quite a bit of interest as some people hadn’t even heard of Season of Docs before. On a side note, I’ve given many presentations in my life, but this was the first time I’ve actually enjoyed giving one.

Work: My tech writing job at the software company is going swimmingly well. I’ve been churning out video tutorials which have been received well and seem to be preferred by clients over the written guide. Working at a smaller company also gives me a chance to dabble with other creative stuff like improving the website, creating a product demo video etc. I have a feeling videos are going to feature a lot in my professional future.
